Sniff 'n' the Tears ‎"A Best Of" 1978-1982(orig) 1991(comp)***

This album might more accurately be called "Driver's Seat and some other songs" - Sniff 'n' the Tears is the very definition of one-hit-wonder, and nothing else here rises to the level of their big hit. "Driver's Seat", though, is a perfect single poised halfway between AOR and New Wave: nice chugging beat, killer keyboard riff, piercing electric guitars, insanely catchy chorus, all ingredients expertly mixed and cooked to perfection. It was based on a demo by singer/guitarist Paul Roberts' former band Ashes of Moon which had gotten nowhere and disbanded in '74, with him pursuing a career in painting (all of the band's record covers are his work). The resurrected and renamed band used it as the lead single for their debut Fickle Heart (1978). Only two more songs from that album are included here, the reggae-ish new wave "The Thrill Of It All" and melodic AOR "Looking For You" with its smooth vocals and cool synth. 1980's The Game's Up has a bigger representation with 5 tracks: Of the 3 singles, "Poison Pen Mail" has a West Coast folk-rock beat, "Rodeo Drive" is synth-driven New Wave, and "One Love" sounds like a typical new wave band covering a Tom Petty tune. "What Can Daddy Do" sports a reggae beat, and "Night Life" is a pleasant mid-tempo rocker featuring some cool electric guitars. Incidentally, the album cover was deemed too controversial ("a rapist's fantasy" they called it - the artist denies that description) and was replaced in the U.S. by another Roberts painting. Which is, of course, the reason I had to have the LP. Maybe one day I'll make a special post with all the album covers I have that have been censored in the U.S. They're a lot!

The lead single from Love/Action (1981) is "The Driving Beat", a bit too happy/upbeat for my taste. "Snow White" suffers from overtly cheesy synths, while "Love/Action" and  "Steal My Heart" fare a bit better. "Roll Them Bones" is a single B-side in their by now familiar AOR/New Wave style. Other mid tempo tracks here remind me somehow of Chris Rea, despite the very different guitar style. Lack of success didn't deter them from giving it another try, after all Ride Blue Divide (1982) had the advantage of a seriously catchy single to promote:

"Hungry Eyes" was their best since "Driver's Seat" - in that Chris Rea style I mentioned, but more upbeat with a really driving beat, cool horns and harp, and catchy chorus. It nevertheless didn't chart, and the band packed it up once more. B-side "Bagatelle" is also included here, along with folky ballad "Gold" and mid tempo "Ride Blue Divide" (good solo, but otherwise boring song). The band promptly disbanded until 1991, the year this compilation was released, featuring another pretty cover painted by Roberts and a longer version of "Driver's Seat". The latter was released as a single, reaching No.1 in The Netherlands and sparking a reunion that resulted in a new album and tour. They intermittently still record and perform, apparently resigned to basing their career on the strength of their sole hit without ever being able to repeat its success. For all purposes, one compilation featuring "Driver's Seat" is all you need from this band - which isn't to say that the rest of this CD doesn't make for pleasant, if forgettable, listening. Preferably on your car stereo.

AC/DC "Ballbreaker" 1995***

Like every year around this time, I'm posting stuff from my drafts folder while vacationing in Greece - once more in my favorite island, Antiparos. For some time it was touch and go whether we'd make it this year, as the covid-19 pandemic is flaring up again - indeed I had to show a recent negative PCR test  in order to be admitted in the country, and one still has to walk around in a face mask, although you can dispense with it when you're at the beach - or a restaurant, or bar, or any place which is non-public which is of course most of the time so it's not too bad. I wonder when (if ever) life will go back to normal. 

Apparently it's been more than 5 years since I last presented an AC/DC album in this blog, which is a pity because I own almost all of them and play them often. Which begs the question: why bother? don't they all sound the same anyway? Well, I'm pretty sure that even the band's biggest fans will have trouble dismissing that argument, except with something like "you can never have too much of a good thing". Ballbreaker is one of their middling albums: not up there with Highway To Hell or Back In Black, but it still delivers the goods. Which, in AC/DC's case means big fat riffs, exciting solos and catchy choruses with dumb lyrics about sex, drinking and rocking out. I wish I could tell you the lyrics are "so dumb they're actually smart" but songs like "Hard as a Rock", "Cover You In Oil", "Honey Roll" etc. are just a lazy parade of sexist cliches. Good for a chuckle, at best - but then again, that is how AC/DC have always been. This time they try to diversify a bit by including some basic social commentary with "The Furor" (anti-censorship), "Hail Caesar" (anti-politician), and "Burnin' Alive" (about the Waco massacre). But enough about the lyrics, no-one listens to AC/DC for the words. Ballbreaker, like every AC/DC album, is based on the well-oiled Young brothers' guitar machine which works just as fine as ever, effortlessly churning out riffs and solos. With original drummer Phil Rudd back in the fold and shrieky Brian Johnson in his usual good form, it was all a matter of getting everything on tape the right way. Enter hotshot producer Rick Rubin, renowned for helping artists find their lost mojo. He worked his nagic with AC/DC, trying to recreate the band's 70's sound evn using vintage equipment. He succeeded in delivering a solid LP that pleased longtime fans but didn't yield any classics like the previous album's "Thunderstruck" or "Money Talks". "Hard as a Rock" and "Hail Caesar" offer memorable choruses, "Cover You in Oil" is one of their funkiest pieces, and "Boogie Man" their bluesiest song for 20 years (since "The Jack" from their debut). "Burnin' Alive" and "Whiskey on the Rocks" are also fun, but the album as a whole is workmanlike rather than inspired.

 

A nice addition is the Marvel comics album art (samples above) - AC/DC would return the favor by providing the soundtrack for Iron Man 2. The album would be greeted as a return to form, as it always happens when veterans release something non-embarrassing. But the fact that only "Hard As A Rock" survived in their live setlist past the "Ballbreaker Tour" says something about the quality of the material. I'll give them this: Ballbreaker is a decent album that saw the band leave their mid 80's slump behind and helped re-establish them with new and old audiences. It's fun to listen to, especially in the car. Does it matter that it's just business as usual? Not at all, business as usual is what I expect from AC/DC. I'm glad they can still deliver it - even more so with the rumor that Brian Johnson has overcome his health problems and that a new album is in the works as of this year.

Iron Maiden "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" 1988****

With the exception of a phase of constantly listening to Powerslave around '85, I wasn't a huge Maiden fan as a teenager in the 80's. You might say I liked the artwork on their LP's more than the music inside. Strange to find me bingeing on Iron Maiden during the last week, now that I'm in my middle years - owing to my finding some of their classic era CD's on sale for €1 or €2. Stranger still for this to coincide with the death of Martin Birch, producer of all these albums as well as many other classics by Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake etc Of all the bands he had worked with, Birch valued Maiden the most because of their down-to-earthness, energy and team spirit. He produced every one of their albums from 1981's Killers until 1992's Fear Of The Dark - his last work before retiring from music at the age of 43.

I may only have bought Seventh Son of a Seventh Son lately, but at the time (some 30 years ago) I listened to it a lot: a cassette copy would play often at Babis' cafeteria opposite the Medical School where we'd go between lessons. A bunch of us (the "rockers" of the Dental School which was housed in the same buildings) would tape music for Babis, and he'd play our cassettes often enough - at least when we were there. In my memory this album was dominated by its ultra-commercial singles "Can I Play with Madness" and "The Evil That Men Do" whose clever use of synths and rousing choruses place them somewhere between New Wave and NWOBHM. But it seems that music critics consider this to be one of the band's "serious" works, assigning it to the Prog Metal subcategory. Apparently, it's a concept album born from the desire to celebrate the fact that this was the band's 7th album. Taking a cue from Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker novels, bassist/main songwriter Harris made the connection to folk tales about seventh sons having certain supernatural powers such as prophecy and built the whole album around that idea, with the rest of the band joining in the composition to make it one of Maiden's most collaborative efforts. The album opens and closes with an acoustic snippet, Bruce Dickinson in earnest "toss-a-coin-to-your-witcher" medieval troubadour mode, which segues into "Moonchild" featuring -after a short synth intro- the trademark Iron Maiden sound: sinister lyrics, fast tempo, operatic vocals and screaming guitars. It's followed by the more epic/atmospheric "Infinite Dreams" while side A closes with the aforementioned singles which rank among Maiden's best and catchiest. Side B opens with the obligatory 10-minute epic, in this case the title song. With its atmospheric keys, operatic vocals and time shifts it justifies those who labeled 7th Son... prog metal. After an epic first part, the tempo lowers around the 4-minute mark for a slower part with narration, followed by a fast and technical 3-minute instrumental part. "The Prophecy" is another proggy piece featuring theatrical vocals and metallic guitars playing medieval-sounding melodies, closing with an acoustic coda. It's followed by the third commercial single "The Clairvoyant", a metal dynamite and live favorite. The album closes with another catchy tune called "Only the Good Die Young". The illustration -which, as I already said, always fascinated me- is by their (up to that point) exclusive designer Derek Riggs, and shows his creation (and Maiden mascot) Eddie mutilated and transported to some unknown time and icy landscape. It contains a lot of surreal details, making it one of the band's weirdest album covers. Although some fans found 7th Son... too "proggy" for their taste, it did very well commercially, propelled by the catchy singles and well-made videos. Creatively it's often considered their last great album. Guitarist Adrian Smith left before the completion of 1990's No Prayer for the Dying, and singer Bruce Dickinson left after 1992's Fear Of The Dark - the last ever Martin Birch production, and coincidentally (or not) their last album I bothered listening to, before giving up on them. Dickinson and Smith are now back into the fold, but I couldn't tell you if Maiden can still cut it as a band. I did read an enthusiastic review for their latest opus Book Of Souls on Classic Rock Magazine, so that might be worth checking out - once you've finished with their essential 80's albums, that is.

Various Artists "Cuban Classics 3 ¡Diablo Al Infierno!" 1974-1992(rec) 1992(comp)***

Luaka Bop is the brainchild of Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. Together with Peter Gabriel's Real World label, these two companies are largely responsible for the growing "World Music" popularity in the 90's. Nowadays every record shop has a "world music" section, and Cuban music in particular has become very popular since the release of the Buena Vista Social Club record and documentary in 1996. But back when this compilation was released, Cuban music was mostly known to the West through the influence of the Cuban diaspora on the salsa scene of Miami and New York. Anyone not trying to defect from Cuba was a suspected communist, so how can their music be any good? - tellingly, the previous installment in the series was titled Dancing With The Enemy. The compilers try to rise above such prejudice and set politics aside, after offering some token anti-communist remarks to appease their American audience e.g. writing about this being a "time of tremendous suffering" for Cubans when somehow they produce some of the most joyous music in the world. Or, while talking about the Metallica-influenced band Zeus, they inform us that being in a Metal band in Cuba isn't easy. At that point one thinks of persecution, jail etc. - but they just mean that Metal musicians aren't salaried employees of the state and have to practice after they come home from their dayjobs. So how does the rest of the CD fare, being as it is the work of salaried employees of a Communist totalitarian state? Quite well, actually. A lot of the music here is influenced by the Santería tradition, a local mix of West African animism and Roman Catholicism with deep roots in Cuba. While the regime officially takes a negative stance against religion in general, they have been tolerant of the Santería folklore as a component of the Cuban national identity, so the Afro-American traditions were rekindled rather than suppressed - the opposite of what happened in countries where the Catholic church remained in power. So NG La Banda's "Que Viva Chango!" (a cover of Celina González's classic hit) is dedicated to the African (Yoruba) God of lightning and thunder, and Lazaro Ros' "Ikiri Ada" starts with an incantation to Ogun, the God of Iron and patron of hunters and blacksmiths. Both these songs (indeed most of the tracks on this album) are classic Afro-Cuban dance tunes, but there's a reason this compilation is subtitled "New Directions In Cuban Music", it's not all salsa-like dance grooves. For example, "Congo Yambumba" (a devotional song from the Congolese Palo Monte tradition rather than the dominant Yoruba one) is sung a capella by a group of youngsters called Grupo Vocal Sampling. Síntesis (a veteran band that started as prog rockers and have always been on the musical vanguard) play traditional African ritual songs with a modern manner: "Asoyin" features synths, electric guitars and an electronic beat instead of the "sacred" batá drums. Other styles that diverge from the Latin dance direction are the speed metal of the aforementioned Zeus, reggae of Los Blues, and the balladry of Carlos Varela (here with a live recording of satirical protest folk "Guillermo Tell"). Saving the best for last, we get a couple of bonafide hits: the Latin funk "El Baile del Buey Cansao" by Cuban superstars Los Van Van, and "Bacalao con Pan", a 1974 hit for Irakere, successfully bridging Afro-Cuban jazz and popular dance music. Irakere members like the pianist Chucho Valdés, saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera, and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval (who later relocated to the U.S) have subsequently followed illustrious and award-studded careers as jazz soloists and band leaders. As a whole, the CD makes for pleasant listening until the last (metal) song kicks in. Nothing wrong with the song itself, it just feels totally out of place and kind of destroys the mood. As an overview of modern Cuban music, this album fulfilled a need at its time but now sounds too traditionalist and outdated. It'd be nice if someone put out a more current and varied compilation out there.

Uncut - Ultimate record collection The 1960's

This is the last of the Uncut "Ultimate Record Collection" lists presented here, but the first one published. I'm disappointed in myself: I thought I knew the Sixties well, but I have less than half of these albums in my collection (256 out of 675, if I haven't miscounted - which is a strong possibility). It contains lots of jazz LP's I  only know as titles, as well as (of course) full discographies by the likes of Bob Dylan, Beatles, Stones, Byrds etc. No objections here: unlike with the 80's list which included some lame albums from major artists, here every album by the "big names" is pure gold. Where there are differences between UK and US editions (e.g. Beatles, Stones) the compilers choose the UK counterparts. I was a bit surprised to see only one Nick Drake album make the cut (I'd expect all three of his LP's to be here). Elvis is also sorely under-represented (out of 20 LP's, only From Elvis In Memphis is included), but where the compilers really drop the ball is with the total absence of Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry(!). I hope this ommission cost someone their job (just kidding)! Other than that, it's all pretty extensive with a lot of essential albums as well as interesting rarities that record collectors will want to dig into. As with the rest of the Best-of-lists here, I have added links to relative reviews in this blog where applicable. More will be added in time...
