Seen from the 21st Century, the first half of the 70's looks like something of an anti-climax after the amazing and revolutionary 60's. I wonder though what it felt like at the time - whether to young rock fans it was exactly the opposite, as if everything was shifting into a higher gear: music getting heavier with the likes of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, or more advanced with symphonic arrangements and sophisticated lyrics (see: Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd), and everything getting generally bigger:mega-selling stadium tours, huge costly productions. It all must have seemed very exciting, until punk came along to ridicule all the excesses of the time. Now that the influence of punk orthodoxy has retreated, it may be time to re-evaluate the era. Uncut writers though still seem to stick to the "cool" choices, so we get e.g. 3 albums by the relatively unknown but critically-acclaimed kraut rockers Cluster but only one from popular prog titans Emerson, Lake and Palmer. I own somewhere between 267 and 272 of those albums in my collection - every time I try to count them I lose count and come out with a different number! Anyway, I'll try to present as many as possible, and every time I do I'll add a link to the relevant review here. It certainly is an interesting and eclectic list, even though it doesn't make complete sense as a collector's guide.
